Producer Commission Splits and Payouts: A Practical Guide
Producer payouts become harder to manage when different producers, carriers, and policies follow different compensation arrangements. A consistent process makes the calculation easier to review and explain.
Define the split basis
Start by documenting whether the producer’s share is calculated on gross commission, net agency commission, or another contract-defined amount. A 50% split means little until the underlying base is clear.
Account for policy-level exceptions
New business, renewals, endorsements, and chargebacks may be treated differently under a producer agreement. Store the applicable rules and effective dates rather than assuming one rate fits every transaction.
Reconcile carrier money first
Before preparing a producer payout, confirm the carrier payment and identify unresolved discrepancies. Paying from an unverified estimate can create avoidable corrections later.
Create a reviewable payout batch
Group the relevant commissions by producer and payout period. Show the underlying policies, adjustments, split percentages, and resulting amounts so a reviewer can trace each total.
Retain statements and approvals
A producer statement should explain how the payout was calculated. Keep a record of the batch, any manual changes, and approval or payment status. SplitVerde includes producer splits, payout batches, and exportable producer statements to support this workflow.
